The perfect black and white interior for me is definately lots of white walls, mouldings and decorative trim painted glossy white. On the floor I love black ink or glossy white timber floors, marble in the bathrooms and perhaps the entry for a more formal grand look. The staircase if timber I would paint white and the top rail needs to be gloss black or I'm loving black iron and would love to do it in a chinoisiere pattern. In the kitchen I would keep the cabinetry predominately white with marble tops but I would select a black freestanding oven or feature a small are in handmade glazed black tiles in a tear drop pattern. For the interior my pick is large white sofa and the arm chairs to be in a striking stand out fabric, mix modern pieces with traditional to create a fresh new take on a classic interior.

As a large family we tend to keep our table settings very simple its more our syle and the way we live, but I couldnt think of anything more fun than to invite my girlfriends around for lunch and go all out and just decorate the table to my hearts content, here are some I saved that look too irresistible to eat!

Sky Blue

Its obvious my love of blue so it explains why I have completely fallen in love with Ralph Laurens latest summer collection. The clever mix of asian and french influences blends beautifully in a coastal atmosphere. I have been working alot with this sky blue colour hue in my recent projects, I find it fresh, easy to live with, classic yet relaxed. My most favourite piece would have to be the chinoisiere sideboard and lamp, too devine for words and definantly on my list of must have's.

Its been a whirlwind week with a trip to Melbourne sourcing products for my clients and styling a photo shoot for Brown Trading Company, her launch of new designs are simply stunning! tomorrow I'm helping out with the winter shoot for Noba White Label and Sunday will be a day at the beach with my kids a good book and some much needed time out.

Wishing you a day filled with love and happiness, beautiful flowers and special moments with those you love. Last night I made my girls heart shaped cupcakes, heart shaped sandwiches, cut watemelon into tiny hearts (using a heart cutter of course!) and other little suprises. Lily my seven year old had a little package of stamps from Typo and other little things, my older girls with chocolates. I must say I may have taken the heart thing a little to far but it was fun all the same! I have been told by my husband to be ready by 5.30pm so I'm looking forward to a romantic night just the two of us.

Black and White

This blog post is to keep me inspired as we start the massive task of painting the exterior of our home, I plan to use black and white awning, gardens massed in white flowers and to mix match my chairs on the outdoor table in black and white. At the moment we are experiencing a heat wave in Brisbane making the task of painting even more daunting, I am seriously over this heat! It's no wonder blue is my favourite colour whether it be wedgewood blue, aqua, turquoise, indigo or navy the combinations of blending other colours is endless. Recently I helped a close friend with her home, she loves modern interiors and has some of the most devine Barabara Barry furniture, we added some new pieces like this bar cabinet with the most beautiful aqua blue insert, I'm really loving the return of the bar or bar trolley back into the home, pouring a drink from a crystal decanter or whipping up a cocktail is such a great way to relax after a long day or socializing at home with friends. The top image is my absolute favourite how devine is the the black and white doors, the blue walls and the dining chairs infact I love it all?

I don't think I could ever get tired of an all white timber house with its striking white painted exterior. I love nothing more than black shutters, black and white awnings and feature lighting to complete the look.

I'm presently working on a house design project and my focus is all on the interior and exterior detail, we are using alot of timber paneling within the home and whilst it wont be to this grand scale it will certainly show how any home can feature paneling regardless of the budget.

Softest of blues

Whether is covering a sofa or painting walls you can't go wrong with the softest of blues, calming yet refreshing and very easy on the eye. As a paint colour it can be tricky to get right, sometimes its easy to confuse for a more aqua blue, the secret is getting more black into this shade, giving it a slightly more dirty colour rather than too bright. I love a front door painted in this glossy tone or a kitchen island bench, recently for a client we painted chippendale chairs in the most beautiful blue and they look stunning.

I'm away this week at design and decoration, I'm super excited to source fantastic new products for my clients and attend some very exciting seminars, lots to tell on my return, i'll be back on Friday x

I just adore this home decorated by Joe Nye who describes his client as young, full of personality and a true fashionista! The home is humble mixed with grand, antiques mixed with flea market finds. The gorgeous mix of raspberry shades and turquoise keeps the look young, fun and fresh.

What a clever idea to cut up a costume book and glue the papers to the wall to create something totally unique.

Beach Style

I love nothing more than sifting through flea markets, antique stores to find inexpensive treasures to decorate a beach house, its that not so perfect look that really makes a casual beach house look fresh and fun. Definately slip cover sofas in aged denim or linens, rattan furniture in white or natural. A often use inexpensive floor covering such as sea grass matting squares, so easy to lay yourself. I also hunt on ebay to find Indian/Balinese style chests, and sideboards and limewash them or paint white, finish by slighting aging the pieces by sanding back in places, this gives the not so perfect look. Another great tip with limewash, water down normal acrylic satin paint brush on and then rub back with a cloth, basically you are taking alot of the paint off, keep repeating this process and till you have it just the right coverage.

This week I thought I would post about beach style and outdoor living, we have the most perfect climate here in Queensland but the sun can be very harsh especially on fabrics and outdoor furniture. In the past it has not been easy to source beautiful outdoor furniture and fabrics but now we seem to have so many fabulous options in both pattern, texture and style, looks like we are going to see the chevron print for a while longer too!

After a fabulous week away on the beach at Noosa, time chilling out and relaxing, going for long walks, gave me the time to reflect on jobs that I will be working on over the coming months, whilst I love beautiful bold and exciting patterns in fabrics I am also drawn to washed denims, dyed linens in shades of blue, working with tie dye, batik even floral patterns, stripes in washed out tones. The idea of white painted floors, natural rattan, raffia and raw timbers completes the look.

This year's Pantone Colour of the year is Tangerine Tango a spirited reddish orange, sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, its an orange with a lot of depth to it. Tangerine provides us with an energy boost to recharge and move forward.

Work Space

I am sitting today in my office contemplating where to begin to get my work space organized, my plan is to find a showroom mid year, but until then I need to create a work space in my home that is organized, functional but also a space to feel creative. I work with colour, beautiful fabrics and wall papers daily, so for me its important that my work space feels welcoming, not overly decorated because lets be honest a perfect looking work space is not really achievable when your juggling several jobs all at once. When we renovated our home I made sure my office space was a decent size I added an external door keeping the home as separate as possible. I started with a blank canvas, white painted floors, white walls and my built in desk, all white, now to add colour. My daughter Jess who is studying interior design full time this year, insists we need good office chairs, of course I would prefer a designer chair but she is right, we both work long hours at our desk so we need comfort, both agree the ugly black office chair needs a slip cover in a fabulous fabric, our lamps need new shades and the office folders all need to be thrown out and revamped, so we are going on a hunt to find whats new and exciting in the world of stationary and getting organised in our work space ready for a fresh start to the New Year.

A New Year

I have made my New Year resolutions and printed them in my diary so I look at them daily, checked out my horoscope for the future year predications, then on queue a seagull decided to bless me with his droppings just as I was contemplating the New Year, of course at first my initial thoughts were, "Are you kidding!?" until I made the mad dash to google to check it actually is good luck, whew!!!!

Well 2011, I am certainly happy to see the end of it, personally it was a year of sadness and loss as we grieved the loss of our son, we witnessed so much tragedy in Japan, the earth quakes in NZ and the most horrific floods in our home town, so many people endured so much loss. On the good side it bought families and friends closer together, made people re-evaluate life and made us prioritise what was most important.

The GFC certainly knocked us about and sadly alot of businesses suffered, but I also witnesses alot of businesses thriving especially in the homewares and design industry in Australia, dont get me wrong I know its been tough, but isnt it these times that makes us step up, makes us think differently and out of the box? My fellow Brisbane bloggers have stepped up with innovative online shopping concepts, two fantastic online design magazines that are of international standard and we had the opening of some beautiful new homewares stores all in difficult times. To me it shows the strength, talent and determination of so many, personally I find that so inspirational.

This year I am returning after a much needed break to interior design, I feel refreshed and ready to tackle some fabulous interior design and decorating projects this year. My blog will be having its final revamp and my website will be up and running early this year. I have set myself alot of goals this year and if I achieve half of them I will be thrilled, I wish you all the greatest success and happiness as we start the New Year with a bang x

Christmas Countdown

For someone who is always ridiculously organised for Christmas even I have suprised myself i'm not even close to being ready.

I have madly being trying to finish jobs and all those loose ends, waiting anxiously for my dining room wall paper to arrive and fingers crossed is scheduled a week before xmas yeeks!! Next week my dining chairs arrive and my lovely old table that has been painstakingly restored, definitely no time for curtains or light fittings but at least we will have a table to sit at for Christmas day.

I'm off to wrap Christmas presents, hope your having a lovely week-end toox

Loving everything about this desk

My bathroom vanity is almost identical to this design, I have just purchased two vintage mirrors and love the idea of the two framed pictures creating a dressing table feel rather than a vanity, I have some black and white paintings that would go perfect they just need framing, hopefully my bathroom renovation will be completed soon so I promise to post some images in the New Year.

Collecting Love

I have always been a collector of beautiful crockery, cups and saucers, glassware and beautiful napery. I believe if you own it use it, I'm not one to store my good pieces away, I love to use them every day or when I can.

This weekend was one of those easy weekends, Saturday we were up early to visit the markets, peonies are in season and of course I couldn't resist a few bunches to take home, some fresh flowering potted hydrangeas and lots of delicious stone fruits and mangoes, dont you just love this time of year?

Today I woke early for my swim at the local pool to return home to make bircher muesli for my family topped with the most juicy passionfruit and berries. I discovered how to freeze raspberries, by spreading them on a tray and snap freezing them, once frozen, place in snap sealed plastic bag that way you have raspberries all season long, especially as Christmas approaches and they become ridiculously expensive. Anyway not that i'm much of a cook but its amazing what you can learn watching Jamie and Nigella :))

It has always been my favourite colour way but my new obsession would have to be navy and light blue with natural textures, washed indigo's. aged fabrcis, this look would not suit my inner city home but I would love this look for a country/beach house.

Black and White Inspiration

A very special friend of mine is passionate about black and white interiors, I love it when we get together because we chat non stop about books, houses and travel, we had lunch together recently and she wanted to know if I had watched the show million dollar homes featuring my style icon Mary Mcdonald, I dont watch alot of TV opting to read instead so I was seriously not happy I missed the series. Lucky for me she has taped all of them, so next week we have having a girlie day of lunch, champs on the sofa watching every series.

One of the most exciting parts of working at St Barts is the people you meet, last week I struck up a conversation with this gorgeous lady, we could have chatted for hours, it just so happened to be my most favourite artist Claire Stening, well I did try to contain my excitement as I have followed her work for years, she is incredibly humble but ever so talented.

For most of us as the Christmas season approaches, life seems to be even busier with school concerts, xmas events and parties, the mad dash to start christmas shopping not to mention our work life. I have spent the last few weeks at St Barts in James street, Brisbane merchandising the store ready for the opening today! The store looks fabulous and I cant wait to post some images next week, so far the response has been amazing, the store is open 7 days per week, this Sunday Jess and I will be there so I would love you to come in and say hi.

House Love

With eco friendly homes the focus on design, modern contempory designs being the main form of construction in my area, I personally believe homes with character will not only stand the test of time they will become highly valuable and sought after, the same goes for large blocks of land, my childrens future will be based on urban development, fitting houses and units in small spaces to adapt to our growing population, sadly that is the future, so maybe that is why i'm drawn to one day living on a small property, to have a traditional looking home, wide verandahs and of course a beautiful garden.

Today I spent a few hours at my local shopping centre to start my christmas shopping I was totally un-inspired by the choices, everything is mass produced and after a while I walked away more confused and with absolutely no gifts. Internet shopping may lack the Christmas buzz but you can guarantee to find a car space and something special, unique and affordable especially with the US dollar working to our advantage. Most bloggers are aware of etsy so I decided to do some etsy shopping, I fell upon the gorgeous Pink Pagoda, my daughter Jess has her beautiful prints online for sale, but I just discovered her devine note cards, what a great hostess gift, teachers present or just a lovely gift idea. My other site is Letter love designs also a great gift idea, personalised stationary for a friend, I'm loving the pencils too, now to choose what design?

A year has pasted

Its hard to believe it even happened and yet yesterday it was year we said goodbye to our son Nathan.

The photo above was taken several months ago when we decided as a family to place Nats ashes in the sea. Byron Bay has a special place in all our hearts and after some rock climbing at Tallows Beach we found the perfect place to say our final goodbyes. When we approached the beach we all stood there a little stunned, written in the sand by a stranger the words "wish you were here" that didn't help the already teary family but it put a smile on my face to think just maybe he knew we were there. Yesterday we returned to the same location. I sat on the beach reflecting over the last year, still disbelieving, wondering why he had to race his car that day, questioning so much but not getting the answers I so wanted to hear, five children lost their brother on that day, we lost a child, I dont think it will ever make any sense to me.

My husband Paul recently did a talk to Nats school Iona College in Brisbane, the talk was infront of grade 11 and 12 boy's most have a car or a licence. The point of it was to share a story and I thought maybe if I put the letter up on my blog you could read it to your teenages, especially as most deaths occur around the Christmas holidays, if one child gets the message then to me it was worth it.

Thinking about Xmas

Its only seven weeks to go and I'm really looking forward to this Christmas, my wrapping paper and ribbons have arrived, invitations are ready to invite friends and family to our pre Christmas gatherings.

I'm getting my christmas lists ready, planning the menu's and the best part decorating my tree in the coming weeks.

Flowers At Home

Vases: Jessie Lauren

I cant get enough of flowers, its my one true indulgence and rarely a week goes by that I dont have fresh flowers in my home. Every weekend I head to the markets to buy them, at Rocklea markets in Brisbane my husband grabs the coffee and Lily a baby chino while the girls go flower shopping, we can spend hours carefully selecting every bunch its no wonder we are on a first name basics at the flower stands! I'm definitely not a florist even though I'm looking to do a course, but I have mastered a few techniques, first collect the vases you need, I then make sure the flower heads are arranged in my hand just the way I want them to look in the vase, I trim the stems to the perfect height, trim one first otherwise you may cut them too short, make sure you change the water every few days, trim dead foliage, I slightly trim the base of the stem every few days to keep them healthy and lasting longer.

On another note: over the next few days my blog is having a total revamp, so I do apologize if it appears in disarray to say the least, but all will be in order the next few days x

Lily's Room

Just a snippet of my daughter lily's room I have been working on. Lily is only six so I want to be able to change her room as she grows so I didnt want to spend a fortune on designer fabrics and furniture. Nearly every piece of furniture and decorative piece I have found at the markets or antique shops at bargain prices and re-painted it ourselves, I'm becoming a whizz with a spray gun, we painted an old french sideboard pink, her vintage desk yellow and kept her chippendale chair white but covered the seat in the cutest check frill. Her curtains are due this week and I'm adding the final touches to her inspiration wall.

My grandfather made me as a wedding gift a small country style hutch that over the years has been painted various colours, stripped back to the natural timber only now to have me repaint it white for Lily's room, it has such special memories of my grandfather and I hope my girls will cherish it forever. He was such a talented man and he died before lily was born, he was a dutchman with many trades, a carpenter, an artist, a fashion designer for Trent Nathan, a furniture maker and to make money in his retirement he made pottery for extra money. Earlier this year my sister and I found his pottery at Wooloongabba antiques centre, I squealed with excitement when the proof was in his signature on the bottom, the lovely owner gave the pottery to us and whilst its retro red and not the most beautiful pottery you have ever seen, its safely tucked away for the next generation to enjoy.

I have always loved the clever way Designers Guild adds different colour fabrics and pom pom trim to her chandeliers, so it inspired me to source inexpensive fabric from spotlight and craft stores, added the trim to create a pretty chandelier.

Feeling blue

I dont dare start posting about Christmas just yet, but as its my favourite time of year I must say I'm getting really excited, when I hear people groan and whinge about decorations appearing in stores so early, I secretely love it, bring it on!!! Our family tradition is to put the tree up on the 1st of December but this year i'm starting a new tradition and putting our tree up mid November so we get to enjoy it that little bit longer so I promise no Christmas posts till then :)

St Barts

I thought I would share with fellow Brisbane bloggers a fabulous position available at St Barts a luxury lifestyle store opening in James Street in November. The location is opposite Harvey's (Old Magnolia location) I had a sneak peak and the facade looks amazing. I am incredibly excited to be doing the visual merchandising and being part of such a dynamic, creative team. I also have the added bonus of working with my daughter Jess, so it definately will be an energetic, fun team!

One of the designers is also an artist and her work is incredible, I cant wait to blog about the cockatoo paintings she has done for the Gold Coast store, I have decided to buy a pair for my lounge room, so I guess you can see whats going to happen here, wages in, wages out!!!

Especially in Queensland the formal dining and living room no longer seems desirable and has been replaced with large open living spaces. When we purchased our Queenslander style home, it was the formal area's that I was most drawn too, the intricate plaster ceilings, the timber detail and the gorgeous french doors that opened to the dining room felt almost regal and ever so elegant. I have always had homes with large open spaces but I can say from experience with a large family that to have grown up space is truely very decadent, so I decided I wanted to create a dining space that I could invite friends to formal dinner parties, special occasions like Christmas, Easter and birthdays.

Our floors are getting painted this week a glossy white and to most people's horror I'm painting all the timber detail gloss white too, We had already painted the walls a navy blue only to discover the dark colour showed every single imperfection on the walls and their were plenty, so we then opted to wallpaper the space up to the picture rail. I wanted to select a classic timeless paper that would work back with my blue and white spode dinner set and my collection of ginger jars. For some practicality I opted for chippendale chairs rather than all fabric and they are presently being painted the light blue of the wallpaper, I have a bamboo bench that will be break up the chairs to create interest. I'm using the lily Pultizer stripe fabric for the chairs and the bench will be upholstered in a pattern from the same collection as the wall paper. Whilst its a formal area I'm adding a large sisal rug to keep it looking relaxed and not stuffy so to speak. My antique dining table that I found for a bargain is presently being restored to its former glory, silk curtains in navy blue with light blue trim should finish the room beautifully. Opposite to the dining room is my formal living area decked out in classic navy and white, our goal is to have both these rooms ready my mid November just in time for Christmas.

Today in Brisbane its raining and cool, my good intentions of getting up early for a run, then to the markets to buy fresh flowers and produce, was abruptly changed by mother nature! with a list of things I want to do today around my home I couldnt help sneaking some time out to blog, like so many of us its hard enough to find the time to do a post and even harder to find the time to visit and comment on others as much as I would like too, so today is perfect blogging weather.

For those of you who live in Brisbane you would have noticed a lot of construction happening in the James street precedent of Fortitude Valley, this area is the hub of creativity and design, from fashion boutiques, cafes, interiors and homewares stores. What is incredibly exciting is the new stores about to open like Lisa Ho, Camilla and the most devine homewares/lifestyle store called St Barts. If your like me and love India Hicks style, bohemiam chic, the most devine art work and one off unique pieces you are going to be in shoppers heaven and it doesnt just stop there, wait till you see the fashion and accessories!!

I stumbled upon this amazing beach house and instantly fell in love with the classic blue and white interior, created by designer Marcelo Brito.

Lazy Days

Last night Adore magazine celebrated their first birthday at Magnolia's store in New Farm Brisbane. It was such a credit to Robyn and her staff, the store looked beautiful massed in the most beautiful fresh flowers.

I have always been the sort of person to only wish others great success, I am a strong believer that if your confident about yourself and your work then nothing else matters, good energy only returns the same back to you. Last night I got to chat with so many designers the Porchlight girls, Kerri from Driftwood Interiors, Sharnel from Sharnel Dollar Designs, Keren Brown, Amanda from Oliveaux and of course the Magnolia girls just to mention a few, what stood out to me was the support we all have for each other, we all only wish each other great success and most importantly that we can all be supportive and yet remain friends and healthy competitors.

So it had me thinking, I would like to organise a Christmas event for Queensland bloggers (and of course northern NSW) we haven't decided on a date or venue but if you have any suggestions please email me at judyelliottinteriors@hotmail.com

Beach Club

I'm convinced I definitely struggle with the word "Relax" I couldn't help myself whilst in Byron to go house hunting, well more house exploring, I stumbled upon the most gorgeous beach houses and wrote down endless ideas and inspiration. I then went on to check out the three houses I wanted to buy in Nashua (the Byron Bay hinterland) several years ago, one of the homes was purchased by Simon Baker from the TV show the mentalist, clearly we were not even a look in!!! Anyway I then found several other properties and one I truly loved, but again a higher bidder purchased the home, it was then we decided perhaps it was not meant to be....

I stood outside the property only a few days ago and wondered how our life would have turned out if we lived there, do you ever wonder what if? It is still a dream I havent given up on, but for now its back renovating our city house and who knows what the future will bring.

The Dunmore Beach club as featured above was renovated with inspiration from the 1960's era, I love the use of vintage rattan, simple but beautiful fabrics and great attention to detail, I simply love it!

After my third trip to Bunnings in one day to buy more sample pots of paints and a little of everything else, I seem to never walk out empty handed, truely am I the only mad person who loves shopping in hardware stores?

I decided to browse the magazine section while enjoying the sausage on a roll (okay not very healthy but it was for charity) and stumbled on this gorgeous home in the southern highlands, I would love nothing more than to build a classic home like this, how fun to design and decorate!

Tomorrow I'm taking my girls away for the week to Byron Bay staying at my Brothers beach shack, my husband wants me out of the house so he can paint, so who am I to complain, a week of the beach, reading, long walks and of course some shopping at Bangalow. Hope you have a lovely week too xx

I'm always on the hunt for great coffee table books, I often give books as presents to my friends and family and I love leaving a little message inside, something thoughtful, a lovely saying whatever comes to mind. Here are a collection of books on my wish list, some I have already purchased and some I'm collecting and wishing for, I'm one of these super organised people who start Xmas shopping now, with a large family, I love to spoil them all, if I dont start now, it all gets overwhelming and I dont put as much thought into every gift. All my children are readers we are not huge television watchers (they would be if I let them :) you will find most of us at night reading books, motivational, inspiring, beautiful picture books, cook books or a great novel.

I cant think of a better way to switch off from the outside world, to put a side your worry's and to sit back and have just you time. I have found over the last year between facebook, emails and blogs I have spent less time reading and more time on the computer, recently I have changed that as I found my head whirling with idea's and trouble sleeping, I simply was not switching off. Once the night time rituals are over I tuck myself in alot earlier, make myself a cup of tea and I spend the next few hours totally relaxed reading and then having the best night sleep ever!

Since we are renovating, by far the fun part is the paint spray gun, the problem is my darling husband doesnt seem to trust me with it, hard to believe when it seems to be more paint on him then the walls!!! so I am heading towards the furniture, I just cant get enough of this amazing tool, it is serious fun!

I have long been on the hunt for two single peacock bedheads for Lily's room that I plan to paint a gorgeous pink, if you interested in these bedheads send me an email, at the moment they are only available in double but I'm hoping later in the year they will be available in single and queen.

I love nothing more than approaching Spring and giving my home a revamp, its always the time that my home has a complete spring clean, cupboards get sorted, quilts dry cleaned, throws packed away ready for next winter and the best part is sorting my Summer wardrobe ready for some much needed new Summer clothes. I always get so much more motivated to start walking in the mornings or perhaps its the fear of summer clothing on a body that has enjoyed way to much comfort food this winter!!! Yep the diet has started :-(

Every Spring I like to freshen up old cushions with a complete revamp of new Summer colours and with fabulous fabrics available for everyone, what better time than now. Spring is the perfect time to have high tea parties with friends, fabulous lunches with the most beautiful plates, glasses and napkins.

I love using potted hydrangea's in my home and thank goodness they are back in season like so many other beautiful flowers.

I stumbled upon this fabulous home in the Hamptons designed by Amanda Nisbet I love her use of textured wall papers and her extensive use of wood paneling throughout the home. The light blue chair with navy piping compliments the navy sofa and of course I love the splash of hot pink! the use of fabric over an inexpensive table looks great and add softness to the entry, all you need to do is have a craftwood table made, stunning fabric, a glass top to protect the fabric and you have a great looking entry piece.

I love being able to provide my clients with affordable options, last week I stumbled upon a stunning large timber table, it was stained a horrible red stain but the best part it could seat up to fourteen if not more, yet without the extensions sits around ten. I was stunned to see it was massively reduced from $3500 to $700 it was a really ugly colour so I can understand why it hadn't sold! What it needed was a lot of imagination and a very good restorer, luckily for me I have just the perfect person to tackle the job and to bring her back to her former glory, minus the last owner who decided red stain and nailing the extentions a great compliment to this piece. I'll keep you updated on the progress, if all else fails, gloss white she will be x

Like any house renovations it seems never ending, at the moment we are tackling one room at a time, patience is not my strong point. I have no trouble making selections for my clients but I seem to keep changing my mind, I'm driving my family crazy!!! Our sun room i.e family room has lots of natural light and its the most important area of the house as its where we spend the most time and its near the kitchen and caual dining area.

My vision is to create a space that is fresh and summery, lots of interesting pieces, large coffee table stacked with books and interesting pieces.

I opted for the most beautiful pale turquoise blue for my sofa, the legs painted white with gorgoeus hand screen printed cushions custom made in shades of pinks, greens, coral tones with touches of lemon. The coffee table topped with lots of books and a tray with a collection of handblown glass vases in colours of coral, blue and pink that I can easily add fresh flowers.

I have two gorgoeus white timber arm chairs in a chinoiserie pattern that will be covered in the most beautiful coral pattern.

My floors are white so a fabulous rug will compliment the look. I am going to add a large butterfly painting which will be a stand out feature in this room.

The dining table is a light blonde elm, I selected a timber bench seat on one side, chippendale chairs painted in pink and my large chinoisiere chair in a stunning coral. Two aqua ginger jars placed on the table top and a white chinoisiere chandelier with raffia shades will complete the look.

I am really excited about this room and the best advice I can tell other home renovators is to tackle one room at a time and make it really great! I have decided even if it takes a year to complete, the journey is half the fun.

The room should be complete in six weeks time so of course I will post the final images to you.

I thought I would start the week with a beautiful white post! I had a fabulous few days in Melbourne, visited some of my suppliers and a quick visit to the Furniture fair to return home in time to help Jess at the boutique markets, I must say we were run off our feet and her soon to launch fashion range will be sold out before she even has it up online.

While I was away I sourced the most amazing blue and white and colourful collection of lamps, ginger jars and vases all hand painted by chinese artisans for Jessie's online store, but I'm sure she will post more on that soon.`

Something New

I sourced this fabulous sideboard for a client, its not an easy task finding different furniture here in Australia, in America I was amazed by the furniture choices that we simply cant access here, we can create pieces with paint and restore the old, we can custom make furniture like sofas and re-upholster but sometimes it would be nice to pick up something different and have more choice, it seems everything is french, rustic or industrial but truly enough saturation of one style dont you think? Dont get me wrong, I adore everything French but its also time to bring in something new and different, they can all happily co-exist we just need more variety!!

My inspiration behind my new blog header had to blue, there is just no colour like it that truely is symbolic of my style. Perhaps its my dutch heritage and the fact that i'm always drawn to this colour combination, from beautiful painted Delft or to the chinoiserie designs that I love to collect. Whether its ginger jars or my mix of new and vintage Spode or the latest fabric collection, there is no doubt I'm drawn to its classic, timeless and always beautiful scheme.

A New Chapter

Rue Magazine

They say in life we are presented with challenges that shape who we are, these challenges - whether its loss of someone you love, personal conflict, feelings of anger, fustration and even feelings of failure often are the key factors in our life that determine and change our destiny. For me the loss was my step son, watching him die over several months from a severe car accident has been possibly the worst experience of my life and it has changed me in so many ways. Boys and cars, I will never understand why speeding is fun! To endure watching my husband now suffer on a daily basics has made me understand that nothing and simply nothing matters more in life than your children and family.

As you know I started my business Verandah House in October last year, we launched the range a few weeks before the accident, we had no choice but to move forward and I had to take on the role of keeping my family together. We endured over 25 operations and spent more time in ICU than in my home and office. Thanks to the press and my agent, we were able to get our product out there in a very difficult time, to say "I was all over the place" ( a comment circulating in the industry at the time) was an understatement, I could hardly function. Six months on, we made the right desicision to hand Verandah House over to another company called Sasson Home, I have known Sarah for a long time and I couldnt think of anyone better to take over the range and to continue to expand the collection.

I must admit after selling Lily-G over a year and a half ago, launching Verandah House and helping Jess with her online store made me think about what I really want to do, I'm 44 and there is not much I havent tried. I'm an aries what can I say, we are determined, motivated and head strong and I know I'm always looking for a new venture. Failure is not in my vocab, but if things dont turn out I dust myself off and pat myself on the back for giving it ago (Well thats after a few wines and words of encouragement from my hubby haha!).

So after 44 years I'm going back to what I love most and what I have done most of my life in between several ventures and that to decorate beautiful homes, isn't it funny in life how we go full circuit? I started decorating when I married my first husband (Okay I'm onto my second, not bad one every 20 years haha only joking!). I was 19 years old and we had two beautiful children and built award winning homes, I opened Sabaar, an exotic morrocan/indian inspired homewares store back in the 80's, then 19 years on my marriage ended and so did the store. I then met my present husband who had lost his wife and overnight I became a mother of five children and at 38 years old Lily was conceived! If you love the Brady Bunch I was Carol and Alice put together! I needed to help support the Brady Bunch so I opened Lily-G and named it after our little girl, five years on...I sold it hence the start of Verandah House.

So my blog will remain the same, but I'm working on some changes as I know longer can go under the name Verandah House, my first project is a majestic old lady but more on that next week, for now I have bored you with my babble and I promise my posts will be from now on short and sweet x
